ABOUT MATTY MICHALAK
Since Matty Michalak was young, he was fascinated with the look of tattoos. He got his first tattoo at 17 years old for a high school research project. Matty spent some of his formative years in the punk scene in his native Philadelphia, which is when he got some of his first larger scale tattoos, although not in a very professional setting. He landed a part time job at the age of 20 at a fairly well known Philadelphia tattoo shop. Over a year or so, that job developed into an apprenticeship. Matty did his very first tattoo in 2002 and has tattooed full time since 2005. In 2011, he left Philadelphia for New Orleans. After 5 years of working in New Orleans, he moved to Atlanta to work at Southern Star Tattoo.
In Matty’s early years, he made a few tattoo related trips to Australia and has tattooed in Scotland and Sweden as well. He enjoys classic Americana tattoo imagery, with a draw towards East meets West mash-ups. Ed Hardy and Mike Malone are 2 huge influences on his work. He makes frequent work trips to Oakland, California, enjoys long walks on the Beltline and is a Cancer, Virgo ascendant.
